About Jeni

Jeni Brown is the owner and head trainer of Shadowbrook Stables in Moorpark Ca.  Since 1998 Shadowbrook has produced many successful horses and riders at all levels of showing in the Hunter, Jumper, Equitation, and Pony Divisions.  Her riders have been Champion in over 15 Medal Finals on the West Coast, and have competed in the USEF and ASPCA Finals on the East Coast.  Her riders have won many classes at Spruce Meadows including the Final Four Competition at 1.30m. Shadowbrook horses and riders have also won many year end awards in Hunter, Jumpers and Equitation for Open, Amateur and Junior Divisions.  Jeni has also been the recipient of the Sportsmanship award for LAHJA and SFHJA, and in 2011 received a National Professional Affiliate award from USHJA.
Jeni has imported and trained many horses from Europe which have been sold all over the USA.
Jeni has served on the board of directors for a few local horse show organizations. She currently serves as President for the CPHA.  She was on the SFHJA Board for 10 years and also served as President for 3 years.  She was on the LAHJA Board for 8 years and also served as President for one year. Jeni grew up at her parent's riding stable, also named Shadowbrook, in southern Vermont.  She attended St. Lawrence University, in Canton NY, and in 1991 she graduated with a Bachelor of Science with honors in Psychology and Mathematics.  She was Co- Captain of SLU’s  Equestrian Team and President of the Riding Club.  Jeni planned on becoming an academic teacher but after college started working full time as a riding instructor instead. Combining her love for teaching and for the horses seemed like the best of both worlds.  The horses are hard work, but it is such rewarding work.  She is always excited to go to the barn, and truly loves the process of training the horses and the riders.  Seeing their improvement is so rewarding for Jeni, she enjoys going to the shows but not because of the ribbons they win, but more as an indication of how far the horses and riders have come.  Jeni is so proud to be a part of that process and share in their victories no matter how big or small.  Jeni is very fortunate to have a wonderful group of customers and horses at Shadowbrook.  They have a wide range of ability levels of juniors and amateurs, as well as a mixture of young horses and older more seasoned horses.  This variety keeps every day interesting and challenging as a trainer, Jeni is always trying to help them improve and enjoy the sport. When Jeni looks back on all the years and sees how Shadowbrook's students, both human and equine, have gone on to have such success and enjoyment in our sport it gives her a great feeling of satisfaction that she was able help them reach those goals. Our sport is so much about the partnership between the horse and rider. The rider learns about responsibility, dedication, hard work, patience, and feel as they develop the skills and understanding of how to be a good horseman.  The horse learns about trust, training to aids, strengthening and desire as they become seasoned athletes.  Jeni loves every part of this process and enjoy seeing how both the horse and rider improve as they learn and triumph in our sport.
